Keynote Speakers

Thursday, July 19th Keynote
Title: Leading in a Liminal Season

Rev. Susan Beaumont is a consultant, author, coach, and spiritual director.  She has consulted with over one hundred congregations and denominational bodies across the United States and in Canada.  She is known for her ground-breaking work in the leadership dynamics of large congregations.

Before establishing her own practice, Susan worked for nine years as a Senior Consultant with the Alban Institute. Susan has also served on the faculty of two business schools, teaching graduate level courses in leadership, management and organizational behavior.  She consulted with nonprofit organizations and corporate clients in leadership development and change management. She has corporate experience in human resource management and organizational development.

She is an ordained minister within the American Baptist Churches, USA.  She currently attends a Presbyterian Congregation.

Susan’s educational background includes a M.B.A. from Northwestern University and a M.Div. from McCormick Theological Seminary.  She is a graduate of the Shalem Institute Spiritual Guidance program. Susan is known for engaging the best of business practice, filtered through the lens of careful theological reflection. She moves easily between discernment and decision making, and nurtures the soul of the leader along with the soul of the institution.



Thursday, July 19th Keynote

Dr. Michael Brown became the sixth Senior Minister of Marble Collegiate Church in February, 2009. His dynamic leadership inspires one of the largest congregations in New York City, and has a national and international reach.

A North Carolina native, Dr. Brown has served several United Methodist congregations across that state, most recently as the former Senior Minister of Centenary United Methodist Church, a 3,900-member congregation in Winston Salem, as well as taught Ethics (University of North Carolina-Asheville), New Testament (High Point University), and Congregational Change (Wake Forest University). In 2012, Pfeiffer University presented him with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Dr. Brown received his Doctorate in Ministry from Drew Theological School and a Masters of Divinity from Duke University.

A noted speaker and frequent lecturer addressing both religious and secular groups, he designs his message to meet the specific needs of the particular audience using humor and anecdotes to describe a philosophy of life assured to bring meaning, joy, and hope to those who practice it. Dr. Brown has also written six books (including Bottom Line Beliefs, and his latest book A Five-Mile Walk) and is contributing author to eleven others, including 1995's "Great American Preachers" book series. Dr. Brown and his wife Page, are the proud parents of four children: Adam, Alison, Katharine and Zachary, and just welcomed their first granddaughter, Anderson, this past year.

Title: Annual Tax and Legal Update


Dr. Richard Hammar is an attorney, CPA, and best-selling author specializing in legal and tax issues for churches and clergy. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he is the author of more than 100 books, including Pastor, Church & Law  and the annual  Church and Clergy Tax Guide. He also writes the Church Law and Tax Report  newsletter, has contributed articles to numerous journals and publications, is a frequent speaker at legal and tax conferences, and has taught church law at a number of seminaries. This years presentation is a part of the closing lunch session and will end at 3 pm CDT.
